ONE MEDIATOR

In our reading today, we have 1 Tim 2:5-6, “For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.” This statement clearly rejects all those who say all religions provide valid ways to a right standing with God. Paul is clearly basing his argument on Jesus' own words in John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.’” Clearly, there is only one mediator between God and men, and Jesus provides ready access to God for anyone who puts their trust in Him.

Not only is Jesus our mediator, one that reconciles differences between disputants, he is also our advocate, arguing our case before God, the Father. 1Jo 2:1 states, “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”

In addition to being our mediator and advocate, he is also our intercessor. Heb 7:25 states, “The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. Therefore, He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

With Jesus as our mediator, advocate, and intercessor, we have direct access to God. We also have the Holy Spirit, the third member of the Godhead indwelling us and interceding for us. Rom. 8:26-27 states, “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

Thank you, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for forgiving my sins, giving me new life in Christ, and for actively hearing me as I come to You in prayer.
