WHEN TO SPEAK AND WHEN NOT TO SPEAK

In today’s OYB New Testament reading, Mark 14:53-72, Jesus is on trial before the Jewish religious leaders. They testify falsely against Him, and, when asked for a response, Jesus “kept silent and did not answer,” (14:61). But when He was asked, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” Jesus did answer, “I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven,” (14:61-62).

Don’t we all need wisdom about when to speak and when not to speak (particularly if we are being challenged/accosted)?! This text tells us that Jesus was being accused falsely, even inconsistent accusations. Jesus did not respond to these. But when asked about his identity, Jesus did respond.

When we are questioned about who we are, may we be prepared to speak clearly and accurately about ourselves. And, written texts don’t always tell us about the tone of voice with which something was spoken, but Jesus surely had the right attitude and answered His accusers with the right tone of voice as well. During this time of Lent when we remember again Jesus’ death and resurrection, may God help us too, to learn from Jesus’ example at His trial about when (and how) to speak and even when not to speak.
